The South West currently has the highest proportion of the population on the UKT donor registry 28% compared with a national average of 22%.

During 2011-2012, there were 40 deceased  kidney donations.

Of these 11 were DBD (donation after brain death) and 29 were DCD (donation after circulatory death).

Specialist Nurses in Organ Donation (SNODs):

The SNOD’s are based in Exeter and coordinate organ donation for the South West. They are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and are responsible for maximising the quality and quantity of organs and tissues available for transplantation and accept direct referrals regarding any dying person. They are always happy to advise and discuss any issues.

There is a named co-ordinator is linked to each intensive care unit in the main hospitals.

The SNODs raise public awareness in donation and transplantation by attending events such as the Devon County & Royal Cornwall shows, Lord Mayor’s Day, and by displaying public information stands in the regions Hospitals and certain supermarkets during national transplant week every July.
